Meet the crew PlayStation's brawler is out, allowing you to pit your favorite non-Nintendo characters against each other in a battle royale of epic proportions (you can read our full PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale review here). The cast list is fairly beefy, sporting nearly two-dozen characters from nearly as many franchises, both Sony-owned and beyond.
We've assembled the final list, and included a list of fighters we want added in as additional DLC, too. Take a look, and let us know who you think should be added to the game!
Updated with all of the DLC characters, including two announced for March!
Isaac Clarke (Dead Space) - DLC We actually had Dead Space's Isaac Clarke on our list of characters we wanted to see added as downloadable content (you can see that list after this roster), and we're happy to hear that the character will be part of DLC coming out in March. The hero will be sporting his Dead Space 3 armor and strategically dismembering his enemies. Well, not really, but he'll shoot them a bunch. IGN went hands-on with the new hero and said that he played like Jak, relying on his multitude of weapons over brute force.
Zeus (God of War) - DLC Also coming in March is Zeus, Kratos's mortal enemy in the God of War series (besides Ares, of course). We didn't think Sony would add any additional characters from the GoW pantheon, but if they were going to we suppose Zeus is as good of a pick as any. IGN went hands-on with Zeus as well, comparing him to the larger characters in PSASBR. With his powerful punches and focus on slow, strong hits, he's more similar to Big Daddy than he is the game's other lightning-wielder in Cole.
Kat (Gravity Rush) - DLC The plucky heroine from the best PlayStation Vita game is probably the most exciting piece of free DLC we’ve ever anticipated. From the sounds of it, Kat’s fighting forte will be mastery of the airspace, using her gravity-shifting powers to set up big damage in the sky. We’re willing to bet that her level 3 Super will suspend everyone in a bubble of anti-gravity, letting her dive-kick them out of existence with ease.
Emmett Graves (Starhawk) - DLC This superpowered mercenary from the PS3-exclusive shooter was a shoe-in for Battle Royale, given that Sweet Tooth’s pre-order costume is also a product of Starhawk. With volatile Rift Energy coursing through his veins, we imagine his playstyle will incorporate long-range gunplay and up-close machete-stabbing. Designer Seth Killian has also explicitly stated that Emmett will have access to the same “Build and Battle” mechanic that lets him air-drop in entire structures to gain the positional advantage.
Nariko (Heavenly Sword) Heavenly Sword might not be getting a sequel anytime soon, but Nariko's appearance in Royale will surely appease fans of the franchise. The goddess of war has access to her dual blades and aerial attacks, and can call Kai for her level 1 super ability. Level 2 has her spawning a turret to blast enemies with, and 3 extends the length of her blades, allowing the femme fatale to take down foes from afar.
Nathan Drake (Uncharted) There was very little surprising about how Nathan Drake played in Battle Royale. Most of his attacks are straight out of Uncharted, and include the protagonist shooting, punching, or diving around. He can also kick barrels, ride ziplines, and create his own cover at any time, making him a good mid-ranged character. His level 1 Super is actually fairly strong--he throws an explosive that arcs, hits the ground, and blows up, knocking anyone in the blast range out. It was easy to hit with, and we caught two enemies with it on several occasions. His level 2 is also powerful and hard to dodge: Drake pushes a column down, squishing anyone it lands on. His level 3 abilitiy turns all of his opponents into the creepy Descendants from the end of Uncharted 1 (which would technically make them stronger, but whatever), and gives Drake Eddy Raja's golden gun to shoot them with.
PaRappa (PaRappa the Rapper) Parappa might be the coolest addition in the game, from his unorthodox fighting style to his 2D character model. The pint-sized rapper learned kung-fu from Master Onion--and he puts it to good use, chopping up foes in melee. He can also drop a boom box that spawns orbs that help buff his Power meter, which lets him ride a skateboard--which, surprisingly, might have been one of the strongest Power Attacks on display.
Ratchet & Clank (Ratchet & Clank) Insomniac's Ratchet & Clank games are some of the most beloved releases on the PlayStation 3, and the titular lombax is synonymous with the PlayStation brand: of course he's included in the brawl. He has access to a number of his signature guns, as well as some of his most powerful weapons (including his ship) when his super bar is activated.
Sackboy(s) (Little Big Planet) "But he's so small," you say, "how could he possible take on Kratos?" Easy: Superbot made him big. Sackboy, now as tall as Nathan Drake, looks to be a wonderful addition to the roster. Using his jetpack, grabber, and other tools from the game, the character appears to be an unorthodox--albeit flexible--fighter.
Sly Cooper (Sly Cooper) Before Sucker Punch was giving Cole the power to shoot lightning, it was guiding a raccoon-burglar around the world on awesome capers. In All-Stars, Sly is one of the faster characters we played as, with skills that benefit from getting behind a character and unleashing a barrage of attacks. Luckily, he has a trick up his sleeve--instead of blocking, he simply disappears, making it easy to escape enemy attacks and sneak up on foes.
Cole MacGrath (inFamous) inFamous's Cole MacGrath is the perfect fighting game character. He can punch, he can kick, he can hit things with a baton, and he can shoot lightning out of his freaking hands . He's sort of made for this sort of thing, which is why it wasn't all that surprising that he was announced to officially be joining the roster. He looks like he mostly uses attacks from his inFamous 2 move set, with supers including the ability to throw ice attacks and to unleash a vortex, which we're guessing is his level 3 Super.
Big Daddy (BioShock) Big Daddy is a melee-focused character, with powerful smashes and a devastating dash attack that renders him nearly invulnerable when he charges forward. We saw all three levels of his special, which varied from "almost impossible to hit" to "possibly the strongest in the game." At level one, a Little Sister jumps out from behind him, stabbing (and KOing) anything she hits. Level 2 makes the juggernaut glow red, enraging him and causing him to kill anyone he makes contact with. His level 3 attack is his coolest, flooding the entire level and allowing him to float around and knock enemies out with ease as they're frozen in place. Wearing a diving suit has its advantages.
Toro Inoue (Sony Japan marketing) This cute l'il cat will be unbeknownst to most American Sony fans--he originated as a marketing mascot for Sony Japan, though he recently made a guest apperance in Capcom's Street Fighter X Tekken. He looks to be something of a shapeshifting fighter, morphing into a ninja to chuck shuriken or donning a headband to call in his buddy Kuro. He also has a form that grants him a leopard-print loincloth and a bright red afro. Alrighty then.
Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal) Twisted Metal’s signature scary clown was the heaviest hitter we played as, with dash moves that smacked enemies across the map. Beyond that, he had the ability to swing chainsaws, fire shotguns, drop mines, and even get into a giant mech suit as his ultimate Power Attack. He may not dish out the same gruesome death as he does in the Twisted Metal franchise, but Sweet Tooth still packs a mean punch.
Dante (DmC) As expected, the new DmC's Dante is a playable fighter in Sony's brawler. The crude, rude combatant brings with him all of his moves from the games, including his sword, his scythe, his pistols, and his wit. Using his special meter, Dante can dash through opponents, or even activate his Devil Trigger, turning his hair white, his jacket red, and allowing him to execute one-hit kills on helpless enemies.
Heihachi Mishima (Tekken) The granddaddy of all things Tekken may not throw fireballs or wield swords (though he does look like Cervantes)--instead, he prefers to thump skulls using his regular ol' haymakers. As the founder of Tekken's King of Iron Fist Tournament, he's seen his fair share of fights; we imagine he'll be punching the PlayStation pugilists to pieces with his signature moves.
Fat Princess (Fat Princess) As rumored, Fat Princess's titular Fat Princess is in the game. Well, to be fair, she's actually more portly than flat-out fat. Different directional attacks have her throwing different characters from Fat Princess into battle, tossing knights, mages, and archers around the battlefield. She can also ride a giant chicken, so you know, there’s that.
Jak and Daxter (Jak and Daxter) Jak and Daxter will fight as one, using their combined powers to take down their enemies on the 2D battlefield. Trailers show them bashing enemies to death for their level one and two Super attacks, and Jak transforming into "Light Jak" as his third-level ultimate ability.
Evil Cole MacGrath (inFamous) Evil Cole is essentially PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale's Dr. Mario. Yeah, he's just a palette swap, but he looks like a really fun palette swap. Evil Cole has always had his own set of moves, so it makes sense that he'd get his own character, with the ability to call down powerful lightning attacks for his super abilities.
Radec (Killzone) Killzone’s Radec was all about ranged attacks, making him the best fighting from afar, using a sniper rifle as his main weapon. It was absolutely brutal when we were able to pick off our opponents from across the map, and changed the dynamic of every fight. His first Power Attack, however, was hard to hit, and felt like the weakest of the bunch.
Sir Daniel Fortesque (MediEvil) Hero of the MediEvil series, the skeletal knight was a surprise addition to the roster. Sporting a slew of items, Daniel looks like this games' Link, with a 3rd level super that gives him an artifact capable of slaying any enemies that wander too close.
Kratos (God of War) This one was obvious. Kratos has a game coming out soon (check out a list of What we want to see from God of War: Ascension), making him an obvious choice for the game. And, unexpectedly, he plays exactly as you’d expect Kratos to play. His basic attacks involve him lashing out with the Blades of Chaos, executing moves in the same manner as he does in the God of War games. He also has access to Helios’s head, a bow, and the wings of Icarus.
Raiden (Metal Gear Solid) The cyborg ninja might have been laughed out of the room during Metal Gear Solid 2, but he's back with his own game, and his own character in Battle Royale. He has blades attached everywhere, making him a versatile slayer, with supers that--shocker--let him slice up opponents. His level 3 actually puts all of his enemies in MGS's signature cardboard boxes and lets him slide them apart, killing them and laying the cardboard to waste.
Spike (Ape Escape) Yup! Spike has found his way onto the PlayStation 3 and Vita, though it's not worth his own game. Instead, the ape-catching protagonist will use his sword and net in Royale, with his level 3 super even allowing him to fire a laser into space that reflects off a satellite and calls down a beam of heavenly light that destroys everything in the level. Because Ape Escape.
HOPEFUL That's a fairly robust roster already, but we're not content with the list so far. Sure, it's good and all, but we have some picks for characters we want added to the game, either before the release or as post-launch DLC.
Chimera (Resistance) None of Resistance's protagonist are remarkably recognizable or even well-liked for that matter. They're all sort of generic space marines in uninteresting armor. The Chimera, on the other hand, are awesome-looking, with glowing yellow eyes and fantastic silhouettes. These villains are the real stars of Resistance, and we'd love to see them in the brawler. Plus, if there's a guy from Killzone, there has to be a guy from Resistance.
Alucard (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) ALUCARD IS DRACULA SPELLED BACKWARDS! GET IT? This stoic hero would be an awesome addition, and he has plenty of moves that would work great in the fighter. And a sword. Oh, and he can turn into a bat and a wolf, which would make for awesome Super attacks.
Gex (Gex) Before Crystal Dynamics was creating a genre with Lara Croft, it was pushing a goofy lizard around on the PlayStation. The goofy hero was an early-generation mascot of sorts for the PlayStation, and would earn the game some super retro cred.
Tak (Take and the Power of Juju) We won't fault you for ignoring Tak - it seemed like a weird attempt at a Crash Bandicoot-style game last generation, and no one really wanted that - but it was surprisingly successful, spinning off to several games and even a television show. Though he might not be super popular anymore, he'll hit a nostalgic note for some, and would be a good, random addition to the roster.
Sora (Kingdom Hearts) Keyblade. That is all.
Wait, you want more? Ugh. Fine. Kingdom Hearts' Sora is a fan favorite, and comes with the perfect set of moves for a fighting game. Oh, and he could call on Disney characters to help, making him all the more awesomer.
Connor Kenway (Assassin's Creed III) The star of Assassin's Creed III would be right at home amongst the Big Daddies and Dantes of BSASBR. His ancestor, Ezio, appeared in other fighting games before, proving that Ubisoft is open to passing its protagonists around. He would have access to his normal suite of skills (bows, guns, knives, axes), with his super abilities pulling from his ability to call in favors from other assassins.
Dark Magician (Yu-Gi-Oh) We... know nothing about this guy. His name is Dark Magician, so we're guessing he's an evil mage, but beyond that we know nothing about him. But you guys have asked us to include him, so here he is! Dark Magician!
Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alive) Ryu Hayabusa's inclusion in PSASBR was mentioned in several leaks that turned out to be true, so we're fairly sure on this one. That said, we're surprised we didn't bring up the ninja before--his skill set, and experience in other fighting games, makes him a shoe-in for the series. Plus, there has to be another Ninja Gaiden in the works that needs to be promoted, right?
Beat (Jet Grind Radio) SEGA's Jet Grind Radio is back with an HD remake, and a full-blown sequel can't be far behind (hopefully), so we're hoping the series' poster boy, Beat, makes it into the brawler. He'd be a quick fighter, dashing around on his skates and tagging enemies as he passes.
Anyone from Heavy Rain (Heavy Rain) How could we forget Heavy Rain? Every character from the game, from Jason to the Oragami Killer, would make for a great character. They could walk awkwardly around the 2D levels, tie people's ties, and scream "Jason!" in malls. It'd be a riot.
Buzz (Buzz!) We'll admit it - he's sort of a long shot - but we're still holding out hope. The Buzz series dates back to the PlayStation 2 generation, and features the muppet-faced announcer drilling contestants with different trivia questions. That, alone, doesn't make for a great fighting game character, but it's Buzz's unorthodox methods that would make him work in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Get a question wrong and he might throw a pie at you. Or a bomb at you. Or drop you into a pit of ooze. He's like Jigsaw from the Saw series - he's a complete and utter psychopath.
Right now he shows up in the Little Big Planet level, but that doesn't mean he can't be playable too, right? Right?
Spyro (Spyro the Dragon) Spyro is almost as important to PlayStation's history as Crash, with multiple hits on the PSX. More importantly he's in the middle of a comeback with Skylanders, and including him in a new game will give Activision make an excuse to have even more Skylander toys to sell. They could release different versions based specifically off the different skins in All-Stars - seriously, it's like printing money!
Polygon Man (PlayStation mascot) Polygon Man is to the PlayStation what Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is to Disney. Meant to show off the PlayStation's 3D prowess, Polygon Man was a trash-talking mascot for the system, though he was killed off before the system even released.
He actually is in the game, as a boss, but we still want him included as a playable character because, seriously.
The King of All Cosmos (Katamari Damacy) We don't care that he's too big - we want the King to stomp around the battlefields in All-Stars. He could vomit rainbows, throw his children at enemies, and thrust at foes with his enormous... erm... head.
Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII) Final Fantasy VII was inarguably one of the more important PlayStation titles, so it's no wonder that so many people have an emotional connection to the protagonist, Cloud Strife. With his spiky hair and giant sword, Cloud would make for a great addition to the roster, if not just to end the eternal "Who would win in a fight: Cloud, or Klonoa?" debate that people won't shut the hell up about.
Patapon(s) (Patapon) We don't know how they'd work. There are many of them, we assume they're small, and they sing songs as they fight. But you know what? They're adorable. And they're ferocious. And they would make for good characters. They are already in the game's background during the Hades (God of War) level, so it's obviously on Sony's radar, we just don't know if they're actually going to make them playable. But we can dream. Oh, we can dream.
Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid) We already know exactly how Solid Snake would play in a fighting game - he was in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but for as great as that was, we don't think we've seen enough of him. Putting him in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale would be great fun, as we'd love to see him fight Sony's heroes just as he battled Nintendo's.
Crash (Crash Bandicoot) Though Sony doesn’t own the rights for Crash Bandicoot, we think that it might try and nab ‘em for nostalgia’s sake. Crash was, after all, the first big platformer for the PlayStation, going head-to-head with Nintendo's Mario. We really hope he gets included, if not just so that we can throw the Bandicoot in a pit with the God of War...
Tomba (Tomba!) Tomba is a wild man who runs around, shirtless, biting evil pigs. That's literally all you need to know about why Tomba should be in the game. What's more, we could totally see Tomba becoming Sony's Kid Icarus - he shows up in the brawler, people go back and play the original game, and then in a few years he gets his own handheld title. Fingers crossed.
Wander (Shadow of the Colossus) If The Last Guardian was out we'd likely suggest adding "random kid in an orange toga," but since it's not we're going to settle with Team ICO's last game: Shadow of the Colossus. The protagonist only has access to a few weapons, but seeing as he used them to talk down 500' tall colossi, we think he'll manage just fine.
Robed figure (Journey) On the one hand, the robed figure from Journey doesn't have any attacks; all he can do is run around making a humming noise and jumping and stuff. Technically, he'd be completely worthless in a brawl, without any way to fight back.
Kevin Butler with a Move controller (PlayStation advertising guy) Kevin Butler made fun of the Wii remote and Kinect in some advertisements, talking up how amazing the PlayStation move was. Well, Butler, it's time to put your money where your mouth is: jump onto the battlefield with a Move controller and beat up some of Sony's champions. It only does everything, right?
Klonoa (Klonoa) Alright, on to the third-party characters. First up is Klonoa, who is more or less Namco's cartoony mascot. Since most of his big games have been on PlayStation systems he'd be a good pick, and his combat tactics of using his ring and Wind Bullets to take down enemies would likely translate well to a fighting game.
Nemesis (Resident Evil) Many asked for us to include Nemesis on our list, so here he is. The big brute was a pain in Resident Evil, but a blast in Marvel vs. Capcom, making him easy to slide right on into the roster.
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) Lady Croft might not be as buddy-buddy with PlayStation as she used to be, but she's still a storied part of the brand. She's also making a comeback soon, which gives Square-Enix an even better reason to include her in a fighting game. It'll get people talking, that's for sure.
What do you think? Those are the characters that we think would (possibly) work in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale - what about you? Let us know who you want to see make the roster and we might add some of your suggestions. You know, if they're good and stuff.
And if you want to see more speculative speculation, check out Super Smash Bros Wii U - Characters that must join the next game's roster and God of War: Ascension - What we'd love to see from Kratos's return.

If there are two characters that should be in this game it should be Klonoa and Rayman. The two have enough connections to be rivals too, plus they were originally on the playstation. Rayman has a game coming out soon and Klonoa's games need more attention so it's perfect. Reply Report

I'm still debating about getting this game. Played it at Best Buy, and it felt slow and clunky--then again, I had NO idea what any character could do, nor how to do it. Conversely, knowing full well how to play a lot of characters in SSB and the basic controls for the entire game, comparing the two (rightly so) may have been too slanted at that point in time. I just want to play as a lot of characters that the game offers more than anything. Reply Report

This may or may not be a hint to future DLC but there has to be a reason why its there, If you watch the credits at the end is a list of games the characters are from giving thanks to the people and studios involved, near the bottom it lists Warhawk, Starhawk and Wipeout. Reply Report

i disagree with you saying Resistance has no memorable protagonists, i forget his name but the British Ex-Royal Marine (kicked out for too much of a badass) from Resistance: Retribution is totally awesome, unlike the main character from the main games he dose NOT have regenerating health but still claims to have destroyed more conversion facilities and killed more Chimera than anyone else. plus hes British and we need more British badasses around, most of us are cast as villains.oh and from The Undertaker from the WWE games, i can see the Lord of Darkness working perfectly in the game with his supernatural powers (teleportation, control over electronics, immunity to pain, summon lightning bolts, throw fireballs, claims to be more powerful then the Devil) Reply Report

I might be the only one, but wouldn't it be awesome to play as Pyramid Head. Say you couldn't jump and were really slow, but your attacks would do loads of damage when they hit. As a huge Silent Hill fan, I'd really appreciate Pyramid Head to be in it. Reply Report

You are on to something here. I think it would be even better to play as James from SH2, and your special attacks would be to unleash your personal demons. One attack would be the mannequins, another would be the nurses, and the third would be Pyramid Head (one or more). Image you are in the middle of a match and all of a sudden you hear that siren winding up... Even Kratos would shit himself. Reply Report
